—-Definisi stroke menurut World Health Organization (WHO) adalah tanda-tanda klinis yang berkembang cepat akibat gangguan fungsi otak fokal (atau global), dengan gejala-gejala yang berlangsung selama 24 jam atau lebih, dapat menyebabkan kematian, tanpa adanya penyebab lain selain vaskuler.1

—-Stroke diklasifikasikan sebagai berikut :1,2
1. Berdasarkan kelainan patologis
a. Stroke hemoragik
- Perdarahan intra serebral
- Perdarahan ekstra serebral (subarakhnoid)
b. Stroke non-hemoragik (stroke iskemik, infark otak, penyumbatan)
- Stroke akibat trombosis serebri
- Emboli serebri
- Hipoperfusi sistemik

2. Berdasarkan waktu terjadinya
- Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
- Reversible Ischemic Neurologic Deficit (RIND)
- Stroke In Evolution (SIE) / Progressing Stroke
- Completed stroke

3. Berdasarkan lokasi lesi vaskuler
a. Sistem karotis
- Motorik : hemiparese kontralateral, disartria
- Sensorik : hemihipestesi kontralateral, parestesia
- Gangguan visual : hemianopsia homonim kontralateral, amaurosis fugaks
- Gangguan fungsi luhur : afasia, agnosia
b. Sistem vertebrobasiler
- Motorik : hemiparese alternans, disartria
- Sensorik : hemihipestesi alternans, parestesia
- Gangguan lain : gangguan keseimbangan, vertigo, diplopia
