Defenisi
Sinonimnya adalah batu empedu, gallstones, biliary calculus. Istilah kolelitiasis dimaksudkan untuk pembentukan batu di dalam kandung empedu. Batu kandung empedu merupakan gabungan beberapa unsur yang membentuk suatu material mirip batu yang terbentuk di dalam kandung empedu (3, 4)

Klasifikasi
Menurut gambaran makroskopis dan komposisi kimianya, batu empedu di golongkankan atas 3 (tiga) golongan :(1)
1. Batu kolesterol
Berbentuk oval, multifokal atau mulberry dan mengandung lebih dari 70% kolesterol
2. Batu kalsium bilirubinan (pigmen coklat)
Berwarna coklat atau coklat tua, lunak, mudah dihancurkan dan mengandung kalsium-bilirubinat sebagai komponen utama.
3. Batu pigmen hitam.
